During the next three days, more than Vietnam veterans and 16 civilians gave anguished, emotional testimony describing hundreds of atrocities against innocent civilians in South Vietnam, including rape, arson, torture, murder, and the shelling or napalming of entire villages. At its height, spokesman John Kerry went before the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations to accuse the United States military of committing massive numbers of war crimes in Vietnam.
He retold the stories of some of them, including his 65 combat missions, during an Oct. The event was not just a chance to celebrate a milestone birthday but for Travis Airmen to connect with Air Force heritage. The centenarian said pilots bombed railroads and bridges in an effort to disrupt the supply chain of Axis forces. They were unable to supply the troops and they finally had to break the line and start moving back up in Italy, which is what we wanted to do.
The planes flew in formation, Marsch said, so closely that their wings overlapped. They would take their cue from the bombardier in the lead aircraft, aiming for the far ends of the bridges. Marsch said this was done without the support of fighter aircraft. He said fighters at the time were unable to carry enough fuel from American-held locations to reach the drop zone and return safely. However, Axis powers typically kept their fighters farther north, meaning the most difficult obstacle for Marsch and the other pilots was anti-aircraft fire.
In addition to combat missions, Marsch flew a variety of other taskings.

If you are from the South, it is likely that you are familiar with persimmons. Persimmons are a fascinating fruit that grows wild throughout much of the South. When completely ripe, the pulp is sweet and delicious, but when not ripe, it will turn your mouth inside out!!! Pictured here are the steps involved from harvesting the ripe persimmons, to “pulping” them, and eventually turning them into delicious “persimmons balls” or pudding. I’m really unsure if this is just peculiar to the South or if persimmons also grow in the wild in the more northern states.

The ritual has happened annually for more than half a century — but the tomb, also referred to as the Tomb of the Unknowns, and the day have been intertwined for even longer. The day now known as Veterans Day originated with Armistice Day observances marking the anniversary of the end of World War I , which became an official holiday in the s. For that reason, many nations that participated in the First World War will also be marking its end — often called Armistice Day or Remembrance Day — on Saturday.
Pilgrimages to the Tomb of the Unknowns at Arlington — and parallel pilgrimages to such tombs in cities around the world — likewise quickly became an Armistice Day tradition for U. Harding leading the ceremony. As TIME later reported , even as early as the selection of the body to be thus honored, the tomb has always been a place of great significance in the American imagination: The simple tomb at Arlington, of white Colorado marble, encloses the body of an unidentified American soldier who fell in France during World War I.
Younger, a twice-wounded veteran, who marched past the four caskets, dropped a spray of roses onto the second. But finally I put the roses on the second casket and went back into the sunlight. In , the U. Today, even though Veterans Day has lost some of its association with World War I and is not only about honoring veterans who have died, the Tomb of the Unknowns retains its central place in the observance of the day.

He was very forthcoming with his struggle right from the start. I thought I had a reasonably decent grasp on what I was getting involved with because my father was a war veteran as well. I was used to not being able to make loud noises, walk up behind him without warning, ask questions about his experiences my father taught me to listen to the information offered but to never ever ask questions of a veteran , etc.
My father was a loving man but not an emotionally expressive one until the tail end of his life. It took the passing of my mother for him to finally let down some of his guard and show some real emotion. It was in the 9 years between my mom and dad’s passing that I finally got to know my father as the man he truely was.
He was wounded still, decades after he served in WWII. He struggled with his own deamons and yet he was still infinitely proud to have served his country. To him, it was his greatest accomplishment. When I met my boyfriend there was so much about him that reminded me of my dad.

Which makes me rethink the adjective I just used to describe what dating a combat vet is like. A better word may be demanding. At any rate, being in a romantic relationship with someone who has contributed firsthand to the atrocities of war is by no means a cakewalk. It requires a great deal of understanding. In my experience, combat vets largely believe they are undeserving of love. I do not know why this is.
In our eyes, or at least in mine, they are selfless and valiant heroes deserving of so much more. These veterans do the unspeakable for the sake of their country, and the aftershocks of their violence unfortunately do not leave them once they get back home. Beyond this, I would venture to say every combat vet has been touched by death. Each vet knows someone who was killed in the war they continued to fight, and there was likely someone they loved among those lost.
